In the classroom that I was observing was a Special needs Kindergarten classroom. The class had 4 students in the classroom- 5-year-old boy with autism, a 7-year-old boy with Downs Syndrome, an 8-year-old boy with autism, and an 8-year-old with a degenerative disease called Sanfilippo Syndrome. The reason that the students were placed in this particular teachers classroom was because these students have deficits that have to do with their communication, behavior, life, and/or social skills. The lesson that I was observing was one-on-one with the teacher and the student. And in the lesson the teacher is with the student with autism and she is using pictures to help the student with his social skills. The teacher asks the student how old he is and when he replies with the correct answer, she gives him a high-five. The main focus of the lesson was that the teacher would hold up a toy animal along with a smiley face and ask the student if it was this animal or that animal.
